| | Athletic Trainer
 Athletic Trainers are highly educated and skilled professionals specializing in athletic health care. In cooperation with physicians and other allied health care personnel, athletic trainers function as integral members of the athletic health care team within the school setting.
These individuals are required by their national certifying body and the state of Illinois to maintain their skills through Continuing Education Requirements or they lose their authority to practice.
Athletic trainers are certified by the National Athletic Trainers� Association Board of Certification. This body requires that qualified individuals take extensive written and oral examinations testing their skills in the five domains or practice areas of athletic training after completing a university course of study leading to a bachelors or masters degree.
The domains of athletic training are:
- Prevention of athletic injuries
- Recognition, evaluation and immediate care of athletic injuries
- Rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries
- Health care administration
- Professional development and responsibility
- In addition, as of January 1, 1996, all individuals who practice athletic training in the state of Illinois are required to hold a specific license to practice as regulated by the Department of Professional Regulation. For more information about Athletic Training, please visit www.nata.org
